Artist’s Statement

I am inspired by the visual world in which I live. To me, life is a feast of scenes and landscapes, figures and faces, characters, forms, textures and colours.

My art celebrates this visual world and examines my connections to the place where I live. Through my art, I try to better understand the natural landscape, the people who live within this landscape and how the two are connected. My research into nature and folklore has deepened my understanding of how we see selves and the world in which we live.

I follow in the tradition of female artists whose works reflect a distinctly female perspective. I am concerned about the precarious state of our natural environment and I am interested in mythological stories from ancient cultures that show us that people have always questioned, and often feared, nature.

I work most often in printmaking, drawing, sculpture and installation. I love becoming fully engulfed, immersed and absorbed in creating art. Combining the two-dimensional printed image and the three-dimensional object has been a very interesting challenge for me. Even when I am working in two-dimensional media like printmaking, the notion of sculpting, building, molding, forming and shaping the image is uppermost in my mind.

I often begin with a photograph, later translating the image into other media. I like to take photographs of nature and then find interesting patterns that can be repeated or expressed as an abstract image. Working with a digital camera and a computer photo program, I am able to distill the image down to its essential elements. The results are often astonishing to me, uncovering ideas that had not occurred to me before.
