Art Criticism 3.D. Advertizing, Body Image & Manipulation ![]() Fashion Zombie, pencil sketch & digital manipulation, Cea Winter 2010 (Time: 1.5 hrs.)There is an incredible amount of pressure put on us to look like the models & if we don't- we are expected to try. This video demonstrates that not even the models (real people) look like the fashion magazine images because even these "perfect people's" photos are digitally altered. They are made into a "super-idealized" image of human perfection, which is really just a figment of the technician's imagination. If even the perfect models are improved upon with digital manipulation, do you think we stand a chance at looking like this? The questions to be asked are: Why would anyone want to do this? And just as importantly, how do these "super-idealized" images affect you? 1st - Check this video out:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaIAeUhUSvM or google: "Dove, digital image manipulation, Youtube" 2nd - In a fashion magazine, find an advertisement that attracts or repels you. Choose an ad that focuses on a female model if you are female and a male model if you are male. 3rd - Analyze the fashion advertising image and the effects fashion advertising can have on body image. (How you think a male or female body should look as a result of ideals promoted by advertisements and how you feel about your own body as a result.) Journal Response: click 1.) Describe what you see in the advertisement: Model? Clothes? Props/ background? 2.) If there was a particular mood to the scene - what would it be? Why? How does the mood affect you? Does it encourage you to be content/ happy or discontent/ envious? Why do you think fashion designers would want you to feel this way? How could this benefit them? 3.) Compare the model's body proportions to that of the human body proportions taught in the textbook (p. 289). Are they the same or different? Do you think this model's body is typical of men or women this age? Explain why or why not.
4.) Why do you think fashion designers create ads that idealize the human body with proportions that are not typical (and often digitally altered)? 5.) What technique or technology do you think could have been used to create this super-idealized image of a human body? 6.) How does this image make you feel about your body? Life? Why do you think it makes you feel this way? 7.) If these super-idealized body images in ads cause almost everyone to feel inferior or bad about themselves, why might this cause people buy the products they are selling? 8.) Now that you are aware of how ads are meant to change or manipulate how you feel about your body, in order to motivate you to buy their products- what can you do to avoid falling into the body discontent trap set by advertisers? Submitting Your Work Upload the Fashion Advertisement, below, by scanning or taking a picture of each. (Ensure image is compressed to 100 KB or less.)
