Sketch: Idea Inside Your Passion

(Time: 1.5 hrs.)

Explore some of your strongest passions.Take a page in your sketchbook to identify these. One of the easiest ways to do this is to write about what makes you really happy. What makes you mad? What makes you want to fight?

If you had the power to change.one thing about the world - what would you change?.Write about why.

  • Now, read it over.

1. In order to make interesting and original art, artists need to be able to go inside and find out what they are passionate about. You have done some of that in this writing exploration.

  • Is there one line, image or word that grabs your attention or makes your heart beat faster when you look at it? Circle that. Circle any other thing that supports the same theme or idea. (There may be more than one theme that jumps out at you so circle those in different colors.)

  • Choose the topic that moves.you the most.

Explore: On a new page, write, “Explore.” Focus on the topic that moves you the most on this page. Are there any memories, images, feelings that come to mind when you think about it?.If you close your eyes, what do you imagine you feel, see, hear, think, even smell or taste?Write it down and sketch images or symbols that come to you. (Sketch quickly & generally - don’t waste time with trying to make perfect images now, save that for your final picture.)

Draw: On the next page in your sketchbook, write, “Accommoder,” a French word meaning “to focus.”

1. There is something more mysterious and freeing about creating under a less familiar word. We don’t automatically think, “Oh that, I already know all there is to know about it,” and stop exploring the boundaries. If you are really attached to English it’s okay to label the page “Focus.”

In pencil, draw your favorite image, symbol and word(s) from the last page that seems to get to the heart of this passion. There may be a story that comes to the surface or simply a scene or image.

Final Scene:From the images/ thoughts on the last page, choose one image or scene that seems to communicate what you feel most strongly about.

  • Sketch this on a new page. (Now you can spend more time making the images exactly like you want them. This is the final image resulting from all your exploration and processing.)

  • Add color to some of the items with chalk pastels.

  • Title it.

1.Beautiful..Stand back now and take a good look.
