Brainstorming & getting into your groove:(1 hr.)

  • Choose a saying, line, or lyric that resonates with you (feels satisfying to say). Examples might be “Love is so (hard/ beautiful/ convoluted…), “Hangin’ on the beach,” “Driving fast,” “Dreamin’ true,” or “Hurricane on the loose….”
  • Take that phrase and begin to write it out over and over again. If another thought crosses your mind write it down, and the next thought, and the next thought, and the next thought until you can't think of anything else. Don't stop, if you get stuck and can't think of anything else, start writing your original line again until you think of something else.

1..This is a stream-of-consciousness rave so it's important to relax and have fun doing it. You might want to imagine you are a character, a 'raving lunatic.' And don't censor your lunatic too much!

Do this for at least five to ten minutes or until your page is filled (write normal size).

  • Type it out. Start a new line with each new thought. If you repeat the original line more than 3 times, edit any more repeating lines out until you get to a new thought. It will begin to take on the shape of a poem, with a repeating chant or chorus line.
  • Make sure the font is size 14-16 so the words are big enough to cut, glue and handle. Print off two copies. Glue one in your sketchbook opposite your rough draft.

1..Doesn't it look kind of good all printed up official? This is how many of your humble ideas will look all tumbled and jumbled on your brainstorming page, but when you clean them up and present them, it is quite easy to see something of value.

Text Art: (1.25 hrs.)

  • Cut the second sheet up with words and phrases forming “bricks.” Play with them to build a monument (picture or a 2-d statue), out of words, to your raving/ point/ issue or belief. The monument might take the shape of a heart, beach scene, or motorbike. Once you have an image you like, glue the words down.
  • Add color with chalk pastel to the image and a backdrop (where is this taking place?).

1..Think about the mood you created in this rave. Is it delirious, mad, sad… or euphorically happy? What colors will best support or ‘say’ the same thing as your rave?

Journal Response: (15 min.)

Type your thoughts regarding the Journal questions in the Notes section below. Click course_material/common_files/editButton.gif at the bottom of the page to open the edit box, type your answers in and when you're done, click save changes. (Remember to put the title of the assignment at the top of the page.)

Do not click the course_material/common_files/saveformarkingButton.gif until your 3 other files ( rough draft of rave, typed copy of rave in poem form, picture of rave text monument image) are uploaded and ready to go.

  • How did making an image (monument) with your rave support or add meaning to your rave? Describe this. (2)
  • Which work, the rave poem or the art, do you think gives the viewer the most information? Explain why. (3)
